November 20, 2017 marks the 28th anniversary on the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). In recognition of this event Child Rights Alliance (CRA) member ChildLinK facilitated Youth Advocate Member (YAM) Aba Crawford to function as the Managing Director (MD) for the day on November 17, 2017.
Aba was excited to function in this capacity and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The YAM chaired the monthly CRA team meeting and shared insightful observations with the team. Aba urged non-governmental organizations to increase their engagement with schools in order to identify the struggles children are experiencing. She noted that some teachers are unable to identify a child who may be experiencing or has experienced abuse or emotional struggles. Those children may struggle in classes as result. Therefore, NGOs need to intervene and support teachers in caring for children.
Aba urged stakeholders, especially members of the public, to be more proactive in their approach to child protection. The MD for the day urged persons to report any known case of abuse to report it. To do otherwise would be to condone it.
