Child Rights Alliance (CRA) members engaged the residents of Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara through a community tour on July 17th 2017. Representatives from ChildLinK, the Orchid Foundation, the Women and Gender Affairs Committee (Region Three) participated in this exercise. The purpose of the community tour was to sensitize residents, especially parents, of the objectives of the CRA and to invite them to participate in our parenting skills sessions.

Residents expressed an interest in the parenting skills education sessions. Several residents shared their views on what they perceive as child abuse. Others shared their concerns about cases of child abuse that they have personally witnessed in the community noting that the sessions are needed.

The purpose of the parenting skills education sessions is to engage parents through interactive group sessions to introduce parents to parenting concepts which will improve their relationship with their children thus reducing incidents of child abuse. The parenting sessions can also function as a therapeutic session for some parents. A few of the sessions focus on domestic and gender based violence. These sessions have has tremendous impact especially with parents who were either abused as a child or as an adult in a relationship.

The parenting session will commence by 26th July, 2017.
