Child Rights Alliance (CRA) member ChildLinK and Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) promoted the Child Neglect in Guyana report and raised awareness on child neglect in Linden on October 16, 2017 through a live radio panel discussion on 104.3 Power FM.
The panellists noted that child neglect is the most prevalent form of child abuse in Guyana. Fifty percent of the reported cases of child abuse to the CPA between 2013 to 2016 involved some aspect of child neglect. The research revealed four main types of child neglect prevalent in Guyana: physical neglect, educational neglect, medical neglect and emotional neglect. Physical neglect is the most prevalent form of neglect in Guyana and children between the ages of 8 to 13 are most vulnerable.
The panellists urged the community to support parents who are facing challenges providing for their children. While child neglect can be defined as the failure of a parent or caregiver to provide basic necessities to the child, that is provided that the parent has the wherewithal to do so. However, members of the public who are aware of wilful neglect are urged to report those cases.
