The Child Advocacy Centre (CAC) engaged several children in a sensitization session to equip them with knowledge to make healthy lifestyle choices. The session was facilitated by Dr. Faqueeda Watson of the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH). Dr Watson is also a member of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights Adventures (SRHR). This group of medical professionals volunteer their time to raise awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights with a special emphasis on family planning.
The CAC works in close collaboration with the Child Care and Protection Agency (CPA). The CAC conducts forensic interviews of child survivors of sexual abuse referred from the CPA. These children also receive trauma focused therapy to help them cope with the abuse. However, the CAC also takes a preventative approach by conducting sensitization sessions to equip parents and children with knowledge and skills that may possibly prevent child sexual abuse.
The children were guided through several topics in a child friendly and interactive manner. They focused on the importance of knowing their body parts as well as the consequences of unsafe sex.
