The Child Advocacy Centre (CAC) provides forensic interviews to child survivors of sexual abuse and trauma focused therapy to help the children cope. However, the CAC is taking efforts to take a more proactive approach to child protection by sensitizing parents and children about child abuse and preventative measures they can employ.
The latest effort occurred on September 12, 2017. CAC counselors visited the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of Providence Nursery School in Herstelling, East bank Demerara. CAC counselors addressed 53 parents and teachers and 34 children.
The PTA were sensitized about what constitutes abuse, signs of abuse, different types of abuse, good touches and bad touches as well as the importance of reporting known cases of child abuse.
In 2016, there were over 700 cases of child abuse reported to the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA). It is generally accepted that there are many more cases which go unreported. The CAC is taking the fight to child abuse by ensuring both parents and children know what is abuse, steps they can take to possibly prevent it and what to do if it happens.
