Residents of Belladrum, West Coast Berbice were engaged by Child Rights Alliance (CRA) members Family Awareness Consciousness and Togetherness (FACT) and ChildLinK via a community tour on November 17, 2017. The CRA members engaged parents in discussions about the Child Neglect in Guyana report released in September, 2017. According to the report, child neglect is the most prevalent form of child abuse in Guyana from 2012 to 2016. Almost 50 percent of all child abuse cases reported to the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) involved some component of child neglect. Boys are more likely to be victims of child neglect. Physical neglect (lack of supervision, lack of adequate food, etc) was by far, the most prevalent form of neglect.
Parents were also informed about the parenting skills education sessions. Over 150 parents were engaged throughout Regions Three, Four and Five in the parenting sessions which started in January 2017. The parenting skills education sessions were designed to help parents strengthen their relationship with their children in an effort to reduce child abuse in the home.
