Light It Up Blue! Autism Awareness Walk 2018
ChildLinK supported the Step by Step Foundation’s Light It Up Blue! Autism Awareness Walk 2018 on April 29, 2018. More than 150 persons from several private sector and civil society organizations attended the walk despite rainfall in Georgetown. Keynote speakers for this event were Her Excellency, Mrs. Sandra Granger, First Lady of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and Step By Step Patron and Dr. Suraiya Ismail Chairperson of the Step By Step Foundation.
The annual walk is an effort by the Step by Step Foundation to raise awareness during the month of April which is observed as Autism Awareness Month, and to raise funds for the construction of a new facility for the Step by Step School. Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder which becomes apparent by the time a child is three years old and affects the way they interact with their environment. It is a lifelong challenge for the individuals diagnosed, and a life-changing challenge for their families. While there is no known cause and a cure is not yet on the horizon, research provides hope and the promise of a better quality of life for those affected by autism. Since 2011, the Step by Step Foundation, a local Non-Profit Organization, has been dedicated to education and ongoing care for children with Autism.
