Child Rights Alliance (CRA) member Orchid Foundation engaged the community of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara in a community tour on 18th August, 2017. The objective of the community tour is to raise awareness of the CRA and invite parents to parenting skills sessions.
The CRA is aimed protecting children from violence and abuse. Eighteen NGOs have formed an alliance to engage Regional Administration, Government and communities in an effort to create child friendly communities where children will be free of violence and abuse. Parents are important stakeholders and are engaged through the parenting skills sessions. The parenting sessions are designed to equip parents with knowledge and skills which will strengthen their relationship with their children and thus reduce abuse in the home. The parents will be guided by a trained facilitator to explore their early childhood experiences to determine their impact and influence on parenting styles in addition to more effective approaches to discipline. Parents will also be sensitized about domestic violence and other social issues.
As at 1st August 2017, CRA members have engaged over 145 parents in these sessions and many have related its profound impact.
