Child Rights Alliance (CRA) partners Heavenly Light World Outreach Fellowship and ChildLinK continued engaging the residents of Charlestown in community tours on August 23 and 24, 2017. The objective of the community tour is to raise awareness of the CRA and invite persons to parenting sessions.
The residents for the most part seemed interested in engaging the CRA partners while a few were reluctant. One resident was reluctant to accept an invitation to the parenting session because she strongly advocates corporal punishment. The resident indicated that her parents “disciplined her” even after she was married and believes that it helped her to become a better person.
Engaging parents is critical to child protection in Guyana since many parents advocate corporal punishment and verbal abuse. The parenting sessions are designed to strengthen parents’ relationship with their children.
